Increases Focus
Spending almost ten days in complete silence not even making eye contact with other people sounds crazy, but it was an amazing experience. Coming back from our Vipassana meditation retreat, my husband and I received many unexpected benefits. The ability to focus was one of them. If you do meditation where you focus on a point in your body or mind, meditation will give you those benefits as well.
Calms Mental Tension
It doesn't seem so at first. I mean when I first started meditating, my mind would go crazy! It still does sometimes, but when you catch a glimpse of peace and you deliberately try to let your thoughts just drift by, you become more aware of your mental tension. Your body will feel refreshed like you've had a great sleep and this is allow your body to heal faster.
Increases Peacefulness
For many people, peace is a dream. Your life is so busy that you don't have time to think. Spending time just sitting still give you the time to experience the peace in life. Your ability to go into a state of peacefulness increases and you feel more peaceful even when you're not meditating.
Develops mindfulness (a.k.a. living in the present moment)
Meditation breathing and sitting will keep you in the present moment which increases your alertness and calms your mind. As Eckhart Tolle says, there are no problems in the now. There is no tension in the now. It is quite an experience to try to focus just on what is happening now. How your body feels and the sensations all around you. Meditation makes you more aware of the sounds, smells and feeling in world that is happening at this very moment.
